South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster took steps Friday to defund abortion providers in his state by signing an order that cuts off funding to healthcare providers that have partnerships with clinics that provide abortions.

The Post and Courier reports that McMaster's executive order also opened the possibility of cutting off the flow of Medicaid funds to abortion clinics.

"There are a variety of agencies, clinics, and medical entities in South Carolina that receive taxpayer funding to offer important women's health and family planning services without performing abortions," McMaster said. "Taxpayer dollars must not directly or indirectly subsidize abortion providers like Planned Parenthood."

According to the Post and Courier, just three clinics in South Carolina offer elective abortions, a list that includes one Planned Parenthood location in the state capital of Columbia.

Republicans in Washington and across the nation have targeted Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers in recent years. There was a push for the federal government to cut off funding to the healthcare organization, but that never materialized as anything more than a threat.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, meanwhile, signed two abortion-related bills last week: one that forces women who want abortion coverage in their health insurance plans to pay a separate premium and another that requires healthcare providers to report to the state about abortion complications.
