Soledad O'Brien Becomes Correspondent for Al Jazeera America

By    |   Monday, 01 July 2013 02:33 PM EDT

Soledad O'Brien has signed on as a special correspondent for Al Jazeera America, the new American news channel announced Monday.

The former CNN anchor will do short-form segments for Al Jazeera's prime-time magazine show, "America Tonight." She will also work with the network to create documentary specials, according to a statement released by Al Jazeera America.

"I look forward to beginning a relationship with Al Jazeera America, which has made a commitment to producing quality programming and pursuing under-reported stories," O'Brien said.

O'Brien's CNN morning show, "America Morning," ended in late March due to falling ratings and the network's plan to rebrand itself. However, she will still produce documentaries for CNN, The Huffington Post reports.

She also signed on with HBO in June to cover stories for "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel."

O'Brien won an Emmy Award in 2011 in the category Outstanding Live Coverage of a Current News Story - Long Form, for "Crisis in Haiti," which appeared on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360."
