Soon, you might not have to wait till the weekend to watch "Weekend Update.".

Politico reports that the popular "Saturday Night Live" segment could get it's own 30-minute primetime spinoff later this year.

NBC wouldn't comment on the rumors, but Politico said "scuttlebutt" is that the weekly edition of "Weekend Update" would air on Thursday nights.

Decades before "fake news" became a buzzword or "The Daily Show" began, "Weekend Update" offered an offbeat take on current events, beginning with SNL's first show in 1975 when Chevy Chase sat behind the anchor desk.

A Thursday night show would not be new. "Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update Thursday" ran for three weeks in 2008 in the runup to the presidential election, and current anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che appeared with MSNBC's Chris Matthews during the Republican and Democratic national conventions to give their spin on the presidential nominations.

According to Variety, ratings for "Saturday Night Live" are up 22 percent this season as it has taken on President Donald Trump with impersonations by Alec Baldwin. The show also has spoofed top Trump aides Kellyanne Conway and Steve Bannon as well as press secretary Sean Spicer.
