Ex-New York State Senate majority leader Dean Skelos and his son Adam were indicted by a U.S. grand jury on charges that they schemed for five years to pocket payoffs in return for favorable treatment in the Legislature.

The pair allegedly sought payments from donors to Skelos’s campaigns and companies with business before the state. They’re accused of bribery solicitation, conspiracy and other charges.

The two “engaged in a corrupt scheme to monetize Dean Skelos’s official position to obtain for Adam Skelos hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes, gratuities and extortion payments,” according to the indictment.

Skelos and his son were arrested earlier this month and charged with running a scheme that dates to 2010. With the indictment, the two will soon appear in Manhattan federal court to enter a plea, and a judge may set a date for a trial.

G. Robert Gage Jr., a lawyer for Dean Skelos, didn’t immediately return a phone message seeking comment on the indictment.

The case is U.S. v. Skelos, 15-cr-00317, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York (Manhattan).
