NYT Public Editor: Readers Take Offense to Article on Shonda Rhimes

By    |   Monday, 22 Sep 2014 01:58 PM

Margaret Sullivan, New York Times public editor, slammed the paper's television critic for describing television's prolific producer Shonda Rhimes as an "angry black woman," saying readers and commentators are "correct to protest the story."

In a post which she called "preliminary," Sullivan took issue with TV critic Alessandra Stanley's September 18 article on the premiere of Rhimes' latest show, "How To Get Away With Murder."

Rhimes is the producer of ABC's "Scandal," and "Grey's Anatomy," which air on Thursday and complete the all-Rhimes prime-time lineup for the network.

Stanley also described it as "yet another network series from her production company to showcase a powerful, intimidating black woman."

Sullivan said that the furor over the column began before its appearance in Sunday's paper as readers sounded off, calling it offensive and "some went further, saying it was racist."

In her article, Stanley contends that Rhimes has "embraced the trite but persistent caricature of the Angry Black Woman, recast it in her own image and made it enviable."
Rhimes weighed in on the column in a tweet sent on September 19:

She followed up the same day with another tweet.
Stanley offered a defense of her column and blamed Twitter for creating the controversy.

The star of Rhimes' new show also took issue with Stanley calling her "older, darker-skinned and less classically beautiful," according to E! online.
