Late-night host Seth Meyers said Saturday that President Donald Trump "comes at it as an entertainer more than a politician," telling CNN's Van Jones that "I would happily push aside what he gives us every day for a more balanced leadership for the country."

"I think he's a fantastic entertainer," the host of NBC's "Late Night" said in an interview. "Magnetic, has an ability to play to the crowd that is undervaluing him.

"I actually think his stump speech he built the same way a stand-up comedian builds their act.

"He tries out new things — and the stuff that works goes into the act as a recurring bit."

Meyers noted the phrase "build the wall" went over well with Trump supporters — and "'lock her up,' that's a hit. 'I'm going to do that every time I go out.'

"It was just watching a really good stand-up find material," he told Jones. "I think he comes at it as an entertainer more than a politician."

Meyers said he did not regret ripping Trump at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in 2011, not long before then-President Barack Obama did it in his own speech.

"I think I did the right thing back then," Meyers said. "I was calling him out.

"This was a time when he was calling into question whether or not President Obama was born here," he continued. "He revealed who he was then — and it was totally fair to go after him.

"Now, it didn't turn out the way I thought it would. I thought he was going to lose."

Turning to President Trump's supporters, Meyers told Jones: "I can understand they don't like it.

"I respect their opinion to choose not to watch."

However, "most comedians are pretty consistent in calling out hypocrisy and lying," Meyers said. "We don't every day just say: 'Hey, we got to attack Donald Trump, what is there?' It's the opposite.

"I feel like I'm being very true to my values when I say what that person just said is lie," Meyers explained. "I don't feel like I'm coming at that as a progressive or as a Democrat.

"I feel like that is very clearly a lie — and I think if Trump supporters could step out of supporting him, they'd say: 'Oh, I'm not being this presidential basher, saying that's a lie. It just is.'

"I'm calling it what it is," he said. "I think comedians are very good when they call things out for exactly what they are."

On whether he would be troubled if President Trump no longer gave him material for his show, Meyers said: "I would be happy.

"Look, I would happily push aside what he gives us every day for a more balanced leadership for the country," the comedian said. "I don't value my show's success over the country's."
