Former world champion and Olympic gold medal figure skater Scott Hamilton has overcome health challenges in recent years, making him among those vulnerable for coronavirus.

For that reason, he and his family have opted to stay home to avoid catching or spreading COVID-19, he told Newsmax TV on Monday night, but that hasn't stopped him from spreading his message of positivity to others forced to stay home by the pandemic.

"I stay positive because I feel like every day is a gift," Hamilton told "Spicer & Co." hosts Sean Spicer and Lindsay Keith. "I feel like there's been certain situations where tomorrow wasn't promised to me, so I really truly take advantage of every single day."

Hamilton has survived testicular cancer and has twice been diagnosed with brain cancer.

"I keep telling people if you were to tell me six months ago that this is where we'd be right now as a nation I would have said no way! With our healthcare industry? Not a chance," Hamilton said. "And here we are. And it is truly is a situation where we've never faced anything like this before."

Still, he said, he takes every day as an opportunity to feed positivity into somebody despite it being such a challenging time.

"The best thing we can do is just try to lift each other up," he said. "If someone is home alone, reach out to them. If someone needs something, just do whatever you can to provide it for them."

Many people are suffering financially and going through stress, he admitted.

"There's so much unknown. That makes it even more anxious," he said. "But I do think that money comes back ... Lives. Not so much. So we've got to hang on to our humanity. We've got hang on to our positivity. We've got to support each other the best way we possibly can. And just live your days. Live your days productively and joyfully in community with others as best you possibly can."

Hamilton was part of a recent online fundraiser, Bladesforthebrave.org, to aid healthcare workers along with more than 40 other figure skaters, and said that his cancer work at ScottCares.org continues as well.
