Hero teacher Scott Beigel, who was one of those murdered at a South Florida high school last week, had given his fiancée specific instructions in the event he was ever killed in a school shooting spree, the New York Post is reporting.

The instructions came as the couple had watched television coverage of a previous school shooting.

"Promise me if this ever happens to me, you will tell them the truth — tell them what a jerk I am, don't talk about the hero stuff,'" tearful fiancée Gwen Gossler recalled him saying.

"OK, Scott, I did what you asked,'' she added. "Now I can tell the truth. You are an amazingly special person. You are my first love and my soulmate.''

Her words came during Beigel's funeral Sunday in Boca Raton, Florida.

Beigel was one of 17 people shot and killed on Wednesday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in nearby Parkland, Florida.

The 35-year-old geography teacher had unlocked his classroom to allow some students inside during the mass murders. He was hit by a bullet as he tried to lock the door again in an effort to keep out Nikolas Cruz, who has been identified by police as the gunman, the Post noted.

"I truly believe he was dedicated to helping his fellow man," said Beigel's father, Michael Schulman, according to the Miami Herald.

"Scott will always be my hero."
