Scarborough: Arrogance Comes Back to Bite Obama Campaign

By    |   Wednesday, 10 October 2012 11:15 AM

President Barack Obama’s putrid performance in last week’s debate reflects the arrogance of the Obama campaign, says Joe Scarborough, host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

The debate debacle does raise the question of whether Obama’s political success has owed more to luck than skill, the former GOP Florida congressman writes on Politico.

“Is the 44th president no more than a mediocre political talent who’s had one of the greatest runs of luck in history?” he asks rhetorically. “And did that luck begin to run out in Denver last Wednesday during the homestretch of his final campaign? A week later, many Democrats fear that it did.”

Scarborough sees it differently. “It is possible that the political class has overestimated Barack Obama’s talents for too long,” he writes. “But I suspect Wednesday night’s outcome was more the result of an arrogant campaign underestimating a former Massachusetts governor.”

That was pretty silly given Romney’s accomplishments, Scarborough says. “Like every campaign that crossed swords with Ronald Reagan, Chicago’s arrogance blew up in its face,” he notes.

“The question now is whether Barack Obama will suffer the same fate as Gov. Pat Brown and President Jimmy Carter. The answer to that question is anyone’s guess . . .This campaign will take many twists and turns over the next month.”

The bad debate may turn out to be a bump in the road for Obama, or it may prove to be the beginning of the end for him, Scarborough says.
