"Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie tops the list of people to replace Brian Williams as the anchor of "NBC Nightly News," according to The Drudge Report.

"Executives have narrowed in on Guthrie in recent days, sources reveal. Anchorman Brian Williams continues to fight for survival after more revelations of exaggeration surfaced," Drudge posted on Tuesday.

Weekend anchor Lester Holt and Guthrie's "Today" co-host Matt Lauer also are being talked about as possible replacements, The Daily Caller reports.

Williams has been under fire since last week when his story about being in a helicopter in Iraq that was forced down after being hit by a rocket-propelled grenade was challenged by soldiers who were on his chopper and the one that was actually hit.

Williams apologized, saying he had mistakenly remembered the facts, then took himself off the newscast while NBC investigates the story along with other stories Williams has told.

Those stories include seeing a dead body floating by his New Orleans hotel and at witnessing a suicide in the Superdome during Hurricane Katrina.
