The Boston chapter of The Satanic Temple has sent a letter to the city council requesting to offer the pre-meeting invocation as other faith groups have.
The Boston Globe reported the temple sent a letter Tuesday to City Council President Michelle Wu after attempts to reach out to individual council members failed.
"It would be shocking if I am to be turned away due to my faith, while other religions are allowed to hold prayers in a government building," wrote the head of the chapter, a person identified as Travis L.
"Our goal in this specific endeavor is to either receive equal religious protection from the city of Boston or to prove the inequity and hypocrisy of the city's leadership," Travis told the Globe. Travis' last name was not used, the Globe said, over concerns for his safety.
Wu said ministers are invited by individual council members. The group said it contacted two members and wrote the letter after receiving no replies.
According to the letter, "the religious oppression felt by those outside the Christian community in Boston is a blight on an otherwise liberal state. Consider what your actions could do to increase the diversity of the City Council's current invocation schedule."
Wu said the invitations are "not based on anyone's religious preference, but it does often recognize figures that have done work in the community and are representative of the district."
