Rove Group Apologizes for Bryson ‘Drunk’ Tweet

Tuesday, 12 June 2012 07:28 AM EDT

Karl Rove’s American Crossroads group has apologized for accusing ailing Commerce Secretary John Bryson of being drunk when he was involved in a bizarre series of road accidents.

“How does @CommerceSec have 3 car crashes in 5 minutes and alcohol NOT be involved? ?#Skills,” the tweet, sent out early Monday read. It was later taken down.

The Commerce Department says Bryson, 68, suffered a seizure before driving into the same car twice and then hitting a second car near his home in California on Sunday. He is now on a medical leave of absence.

Crossroads later tweeted, “Earlier Bryson tweet with hashtag #skills attempted levity (before facts known) and failed miserably. We took it down and regret the tweet,” reads the later message on Twitter.

Bryson, who joined President Barack Obama’s Cabinet less than eight months ago, was found unconscious in his car after the accidents. He voluntarily took and passed a breathalyzer test and police in San Gabriel, Calif., say they are awaiting results from more comprehensive blood tests before deciding whether to charge him.
