While Chicago has a long history of corrupt politicians, officials Friday were faced with the unusual situation of swearing in Chicago City Councilman Robert Battle as he sat behind bars on federal drug and homicide charges, Mediaite reports.

Despite being arrested in September on a charge of marijuana possession and a month later being charged in the shooting death of Reimundo Camarillo Jr., the Democratic councilman won his re-election campaign in November and according to nwitimes.com has no intention of removing himself from office.

"The right thing to do at this time would be to resign, step aside so the East Chicago citizens in the third district can be represented properly," said Lake County Sheriff John Buncich.

He added, "It's wrong for the taxpayers, wrong for our party . . . I can't remember a situation like this."

By law, Battle will continue to earn his $42,365 salary until he resigns or admits his guilt.

However, the Times reports that the Chicago councilman has maintained his innocence and has said through his attorney that "he shot Reimundo Camarillo Jr., 31, on Oct. 12 in self-defense."

Battle is scheduled to stand trial the week of Aug. 8, 2016.
