Neighbors Rally to Aid Baltimore-Area Man Beaten by Teens

The videotaped beating of a Baltimore-area man by as many as four dozen high-school students has led to a handful of arrests — with police promising more — and a campaign by the victim's supporters to pay his spiraling medical bills, the Daily Mail reports.

The April 22 attack on Rick Fletcher outside his home in Dundalk, Maryland, in Baltimore County, has outraged the community and spurred more than $34,000 in online pledges to date from friends, family members, neighbors, and complete strangers.

"We estimate his medical bills will be between $200,000-$400,000," reads a summary of the crowdfunding campaign launched by Fletcher's Harbor View neighborhood association.

"His medical insurance will not pay for all of the bills. At this time, he is out of the hospital but he will need several additional surgeries. So Rick has a long road to recovery."

Friends say Fletcher, 61, is now disabled as a result of injuries he suffered after he tried to break up a fight between two girls believed to be from nearby Baltimore Community High School, a self-described "second chance" learning institution for at-risk students aged 14 to 21.

Authorities say Fletcher saw the girls fighting on or around his truck, and went outside to ask them to stop, and that's when a group of teens numbering upward of 50 swarmed and attacked him.

In a prolonged and vicious beating captured on surveillance and cell phone video,  Fletcher was left with two broken eye sockets, broken ribs, a broken nose and bleeding on the brain, authorities said. Afterward, he was hospitalized and placed into a medically induced coma.

Fletcher himself, now back at home, said on Monday on his Facebook page  that four people have been arrested in the attack, with one making bail, although he gave no source for his information.

Local news reports have tallied three arrests so far, including two 17-year-old males who are being charged as adults, and a 15-year-old girl charged as a juvenile.

The first 17-year-old to be arrested, Antoine Willie Lawson, was indicted last week on charges of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, robbery, and theft, according to WBAL-TV Ch. 11 in Baltimore.
