Former national security adviser John Bolton, whose upcoming book claims to have impeachable information about President Donald Trump's foreign policy decisions, is a creature of "Washington" who is upset that the president just wants to shake up how things are done, former acting director of national intelligence Richard Grenell told Newsmax TV.
"John Bolton was a boss of mine ... I was at the U.N. for eight years, and he was there for roughly one of those years. I think that it's very important to understand that he is a creature of Washington. He is somebody that wants to stay in Washington and therefore is rewarded by the things of Washington. I just don't view the world that way," Grenell said Friday during an appearance on "Greg Kelly Reports."
Grenell continued, "I think it's important to have an outside viewpoint, and that's why I supported President Trump early, and that's why I think he's a great president is because he is somebody who challenges the system and brings a brand new perspective, and I really value that, and I know the American people value that, as well."
Grenell said Trump goes against the status quo by upsetting arrangements that past leaders have set up with other countries. But those agreements have become costly for Americans, so now Trump wants to change how things are done, which bothers people like Bolton.
"I fundamentally believe Washington has a huge problem. The people who stay there, work there, grow up there, they move from deputy assistant, to the assistant, to principal assistant, and they just keep moving up from one bureaucracy to the other. I think that's a real problem. I think we need to have a system that's a real problem. I think we need to have a system where it's Washington paying attention to the American people," Grenell said.
Grenell also thinks the Russian investigation against Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, "is something that never should have continued the way it did."
"When you look at how the Russian investigation was developed, there were a lot of red flags from the very beginning that were pushed aside or classified and pushed away," Grenell said.
"The fact of the matter is ... there were plenty of people that said, this is not something that should go forward, and those voices were not listened to, and so, I think transparency is our friend. Let's let the information get out to the American people, and they will see that this Russian investigation from the very beginning was something that was waved off by those on the inside. It wasn't a good idea, and yet it continued."
