Richer Americans are beginning to eat out and order delivery at a higher rate than those who earn less money, according to a new poll.

A recent survey conducted by CivicScience shows:

  • 20% of Americans with an income over $100,000 say they have dined in and ordered takeout.
  • 18% of Americans with an income between $50,000-$100,000 report they have dined in and placed an order for takeout.
  • 13% of Americans with an income under $50,000 say they have dined in and ordered takeout.

The poll results show that Americans making over $100,000 are more likely to dine in at a restaurant than people making less money. The poll also indicates that people earning less than $50,000 a year are the most likely to say they haven’t ordered delivery, takeout or eaten at a restaurant. Of those making under $50,000 who were surveyed, 26% say they haven’t dined in or taken food out compared to 14% of people making over $100,000.

Axios reports that wealthy Americans have a greater portion of overall income than ever before. The return to spending on food could help restaurants and fast food sectors after the richest quarter of Americans cut their spending more than any other income group, according to a study by Harvard University researchers.

The poll surveyed 31,829 Americans on July 30.
