More Surgery for Harry Reid Wednesday

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid will undergo his second surgery of 2015 on Wednesday as he continues his recovery from his catastrophic New Year’s Day exercise accident.

The Nevada Democrat is scheduled to have follow-up surgery on his right eye at George Washington University in Washington.

Reid underwent nearly four hours of surgery Jan. 26 to repair broken bones in his face. But the senator's eye was so swollen he will require another surgery as he "fights to regain sight in his eye," Politico reported. Reid's office said he would be sidelined for the rest of the week but was not expected to need more time after that.

Reid broke ribs and facial bones when a piece of exercise equipment malfunctioned as he was working out at his home in Henderson, Nevada on Jan 1.

He was taken to a hospital in Henderson and later transferred to the University Medical Center in Las Vegas for further tests before being released the following day.

The veteran lawmaker has had a series of health-related scares in recent years.
In August 2005, Reid suffered a mild stroke.

In May 2011, Reid dislocated a shoulder and suffered a contusion above his left eye when he slipped after an early morning run in the rain. In October 2012, he suffered hip and rib contusions in a chain reaction car crash.
