Most women don't think they should be required to register with the federal Selective Service System if a military draft was ever needed again, a new poll shows.
The
Rasmussen Reports survey released Wednesday finds a fairly even split about whether drafting women is a good idea, with 49 percent of all voters supporting the idea and 44 percent disagreeing.
A majority of men – 61 percent – think women should register, but only 38 percent of female voters agree and 52 percent oppose a draft registration requirement for women.
The draft hasn't been used since the Vietnam War.
In other findings:
- 30 percent believe U.S. citizens should be required to spend one year in public service.
- 36 percent of men think the United States should have a military draft; 21 percent of women agree.
- 53 percent of Republicans oppose making women register for the draft; 43 percent of Democrats oppose it, while 49 percent of Democrats and 58 percent of independents favor women registering.
The margin of error in the survey is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
The survey comes after top U.S. Marine Corps and Army generals said earlier this month that
women should be required to register for the military draft along with men as the armed forces move toward integrating women into combat positions.
