Rasmussen: 71% Want Voter ID Laws

By    |   Wednesday, 17 October 2012 01:28 PM EDT

Two-thirds of likely voters believe that fraud at the polls is a major issue, with more than seven out of 10 believing that Americans should have to provide identification before casting their ballot, a new poll reveals.

But the survey from Rasmussen Reports also shows that the number of those who believe ID requirements are discriminatory is at its highest point ever.

According to the poll of 1,000 likely voters, 71 percent believe that ID should be required while 22 percent oppose the idea.

The survey showed there is a large partisan gap, with 94 of Republicans favoring ID while only around half of Democrats believe the same.

Despite the figure of 34 percent who say such provisions could be discriminatory being the highest ever, 58 percent say it is not.

And 37 percent believe it is more common for eligible voters to be prevented from voting than it is for people casting their ballot when they should not.

However, 45 percent believe it is the other way around.
