Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul rebuked his Republican colleagues on Wednesday, sarcastically saying they should apologize to former President Barak Obama about spending as they consider another coronavirus economic relief/stimulus package that could top $1 trillion.

“I am very upset with my colleagues,” Paul said on Fox News Channel’s “Your World With Neil Cavuto.” “They went eight years. They should apologize now to President Obama for complaining he was spending and borrowing too much. He was a piker compared to their borrowing and what they’re doing now.”

Paul’s comments came in a discussion about reports of negotiations between the White House, Republicans and Democrats regarding the latest relief bill. House Democrats passed a $3 trillion bill in May, but even the $1 trillion package being bandied about in recent days is too much for Paul.

"Republicans and Democrats compromise every day of the year to spend money we don't have,” Paul said. “We were already running a trillion dollars short just with our normal budgetary expenses for the year. We added $3 trillion, now they're talking about another $1-$2 trillion. We're going to borrow another $5 trillion in five months."

He said he remembered when conservatives complained about then-President George W. Bush borrowing $5 trillion in eight years, and also pointed to the price of gold exceeding $2,000 an ounce.

Paul suggested that the proposals being put forth by Republicans, as well as Democrats, were an attempt to buy votes, but that the GOP had more to lose.

"They might lose this election because they are acting like Democrats now,” he said.
