Queen guitarist Brian May has revealed in an Instagram video that, in the midst of his bizarre gardening accident earlier this month, he actually suffered a heart attack.
"I told you I had a ripped muscle [in my gluteus maimus],” said May, 72, late Sunday night. "It was amusing, really. ...I thought I was a very healthy guy and everyone said, 'You've got a great blood pressure, you've got a great heart rate,' and I keep fit. In the middle of the whole saga of the painful backside, I had a small heart attack... It was about 40 minutes of pain in the chest and tightness and the feeling in the arms and sweating."
Upon being checked, May said his doctors told him "I actually turned out to have three arteries which were congested and in danger of blocking the supply of blood to my heart."
He said that some experts recommended that he undergo triple heart bypass, but May decided instead to have stent surgery, which allowed for a much shorter recovery time, according to USA Today.
"I was very lucky to be treated as an emergency case, but I think it kind of was an emergency," he said, adding that he now feels he's "in good shape for some time to come" and encouraged others his age to get an angiogram, because he had "no idea" his heart wasn't in good shape.
