Some people are falsely identifying the white nationalists who marched in Charlottesville, Va., and releasing their information on social media, The New York Times reported Monday.

Kyle Quinn, an assistant professor of engineering at the University of Arkansas, was one person incorrectly identified. Social media sleuths said Quinn attended the rally, which turned violent when white nationalists clashed with counter-demonstrators, but the man in the photograph they were referring to had a similar build and wore an "Arkansas Engineering" T-shirt.

"You have celebrities and hundreds of people doing no research online, not checking facts," Quinn told the Times. "I've dedicated my life to helping all people, trying to improve healthcare, and train the next generation of scientists, and this is potentially throwing a wrench in that."

Quinn, whose address was posted on social media, received vulgar messages on Twitter and Instagram.

The user behind the Twitter account @YesYoureRacist was one of the social media accounts attempting to verify people who were at the rally, and claimed success when Cole Smith was fired from his job at a hot dog restaurant in California.

"The actions of those in Charlottesville are not supported by Top Dog," the restaurant said Sunday.
