Some postal service workers with coronavirus symptoms are being asked to work, and without protective gear, reports ProPublica.

One worker in Denver told the nonprofit he was pressured to stay on his route delivering mail for days while he waited for a doctor's note. A mail carrier in the Northwest said he was still delivering mail even after a nurse told him he likely has the virus.

Ten other carriers told ProPublica they have no hand sanitizer on routes.

The coronavirus, which started in Wuhan, China, has infected more than 247,739 people worldwide and killed more than 10,024.

In the United States, 13,737-plus have been infected and 201 have died.

While many businesses have sent workers home to work or shut down altogether, the postal service was still whirring along despite concerns the virus could spread through the mail.

"The Postal Service is an essential service for purposes of its compliance with state or municipality shelter-in-place orders or other social distancing restrictions," a spokesperson told KXAN on Tuesday. "The Postal Service delivers medications, Social Security checks, and is the leading delivery service for on-line purchases."

The CDC, the World Health Organization and the Surgeon General, though, have indicated there is currently no evidence that COVID-19 could spread through the mail.

"The likelihood of an infected person contaminating commercial goods is low and the risk of catching the virus that causes COVID-19 from a package that has been moved, traveled, and exposed to different conditions and temperature is also low," says WHO on its website.
