Americans take sexual harassment more seriously than they did two decades ago, according to a CNN poll released Friday.

The survey finds:

  • 68 percent view sexual harassment as "extremely" or "very" serious.
  • 19 percent see sexual harassment as extremely serious.
  • 49 percent see it as very serious.
  • 22 percent see it as somewhat serious.
  • 8 percent see it as not very serious.
  • 2 percent had no opinion.

The result is a 34-point increase from when CNN and Time asked the question in 1998, when only 34 percent saw the issue as extremely or very serious, CNN reported.

Women are more likely to see harassment as a very serious issue, with 73 percent viewing harassment as extremely or very serious, compared to 63 percent of men who share that view.

Democrats and independents take a more serious view of the issue:

  • 85 percent of Democrats view harassment as extremely or very serious.
  • 68 percent of independents view harassment as extremely or very serious.
  • 45 percent of Republicans share that view.

Those who took the poll also were asked about accusations against President Donald Trump about actions that allegedly took place before he became president.

Overall, 61 percent believe the accusations are mostly true.

Eighty-nine percent of Democrats say the accusations are true, compared to 18 percent of Republicans who believe the accusations are true.

Congress' Office of Compliance paid out more than $265,000 over the last decade to settle sexual harassment or discrimination claims.
