Poll: Rich Believe Government Benefits Make the Poor's Lives Easy

America's rich people think poor people have it easy because "they can get government benefits without doing anything in return," a new report released by the Pew Research Center says, but the poor say that's nonsense.

The survey questioned 3,154 people last fall, and instead of relying just on family income, the poll factored in data about economic security and insecurity, including the ability to pay bills, measures of hardship including receiving financial assistance, and having tools such as credit cards and bank accounts.  Respondents were divided into five groups as a result.

More than half of the people among the most financially secure and half in the group just below them said they feel poor people have it easy, reports The Washington Post.

But 70 percent of those in the least-financially secure group said poor people have it tough because their government benefits "don't go far enough."

And the higher the income level, the more likely the person was to say that the government should not extend more benefits for the poor, the poll revealed. Overall, 44 percent said the government should do more, while 51 percent said the government can't afford to do more.

But conversely, just 34 percent of the those who were most financially secure said they believe the government should do more to help people, while 62 percent of them said the government can't afford to do more.

In comparison, 60 percent of the people surveyed at the lowest level said the government should do more, while 37 percent of the least financially secure surveyed said the government couldn't afford more benefits.

Nearly half of those who said they are financially secure also identified as being politically conservative the Pew report revealed. Their responses tied in with another Pew survey,  taken last summer, that revealed that more than 75 percent of conservatives believe the "poor have it easy."

Another poll  last fall showed that a quarter of Americans think poor people are poor simply because they do not work hard enough.

The least financially secure, the newest Pew poll found, tend to be women, non-whites, unmarried, or people with a health condition that limits their ability to work, either at home or outside the home at a job.

In fact,  more than six out of every 10 of the least financially secure people are women, many from racial or ethnic minorities. About 48 percent are white, non-Hispanic, and 31 percent have never been been married.

Forty seven percent of the most financially secure have a college degree, compared with 7 percent of the least-financially secure, while 63 percent of the least secure have only a high school diploma or less.
