Democrat Ralph Northam is favored by 51 percent of voters in the Virginia governor race, while his Republican opponent Ed Gillespie is backed by 45 percent, according to a new poll by the Wason Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University.

Here is how the poll, released Monday, breaks down:

  • 86 percent of conservatives back Gillespie, while 12 percent favor Northam.
  • 91 percent of liberals support Northam, compared to 6 percent who back Gillespie.
  • 62 percent of moderates favor Northam, while 33 percent support Gillespie.

"While each candidate seems to have locked down his base, Northam appears to be winning the appeal to political independents and ideological moderates," said Quentin Kidd, director of the Wason Center.

The survey, conducted Oct.29-Nov. 4, surveyed 839 likely voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.

The election is Tuesday.
