Nearly eight in 10 Americans feel some level of stress in their daily lives, including those who "frequently" encounter stress higher than levels reported after 9/11, according to the latest Gallup News survey.

The results, according to Gallup:

  • 44 percent frequently experience stress daily, up 2 points since 2001.
  • 35 percent sometimes experience daily stress.
  • 17 percent rarely have daily stress.
  • 4 percent never feel stress.

The 44 percent who frequently feel stressed on a daily basis is the highest recorded by Gallup since 2001.

Concurrent to those findings, 41 percent say they lack the time to do the things they want, while 59 percent say they do have enough time, according to Gallup.

Breaking down the sub-groups, Gallup finds that those surveyed with children under the age of 18 are the ones who most experience frequent stress, at 58 percent. That group also ranks highest of reporting they don't have enough time — 55 percent.

The next highest at feeling frequent stress is the 30-49 age group at 56 percent.

Those over 65 are the least likely to experience frequent stress (24 percent.)

"Much has changed in the past decade, not the least of which is the proliferation of smartphones," Gallup writes. "This technology may be providing some efficiencies in people's lives … thus enabling them to feel they are getting more done.

"Yet there has not been an obvious payoff in reduced stress. It's possible that some aspects of the new technology, like social media, are offsetting others in changing how much stress people experience," Gallup writes.

Gallup's results are based on interviews conducted Dec. 4-11 with a random sample of 1,049 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The margin of sampling error is 4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
