Officials in suburban Detroit are investigating and a municipal worker is recovering after he needed 13 stitches to close cuts caused by razor blades taped to a political yard sign that he tried to move because it was too close to the roadway.
The worker in Commerce Township northwest of Detroit was able to drive himself to the hospital after he pulled over to move signs that were 9 feet too close to a road.
“He pulled over, reached down to grab it…He actually thought it was electrified. He jumped and let go of it, looked at his hand and realized he was bleeding aggressively,” Commerce Township Supervisor Dave Scott told Detroit NBC network affiliate WDIV.
“Why would someone set a boobytrap sign to harm someone? A child could have picked it up,” Scott said.
The homeowner whose property the sign was on said she had several advocating the re-election of President Donald Trump that were stolen, along with a banner. The signs recently returned, she told Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies, but she was unaware of any razor blades.
The razor blades lined the lower edge of the sign.
"Anyone passing by could've grabbed hold of the sign and been injured, a kid, a dog walking, whatever the case may be," Scott told Detroit’s Fox network affiliate WJBK. "You can't boobytrap signs with the intent to hurt someone. You know, I've seen signs that have been tied to a tree, chained to a fence post or a mailbox, preventing them from being removed. This was simply laid out to hurt someone - and it did."
