Monday, 28 July 2014 02:31 PM EDT

Two U.S. Marshals and a New York City police officer were shot and wounded on Monday while trying to arrest a suspect in the city's Greenwich Village neighborhood, the police said.

The suspect was shot and killed, and the wounded law enforcement agents were hospitalized, New York Police Department Commissioner William Bratton said at a news conference.

There was no immediate information on what the suspect was being sought for or the extent of the officers' injuries.

The NYPD and the U.S. Marshals Service were investigating.

"This has all just transpired," Bratton said. "It's a very active crime scene investigation."
