The Justice Department is providing the Dallas Police Department with $3.1 million to help hire new officers in the wake of the deadly ambush that left five officers dead in July.

The money, according to NBC's Dallas-Fort Worth affiliate, is part of a $119 million chunk of money the federal government is giving to police departments across the country.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch is expected to attend a forum Tuesday in Dallas during National Community Policing Week. Two members of the Dallas Cowboys — Jason Witten and Barry Church — will also take part in activities at the weeklong event.

The $3.1 million earmarked for Dallas will allow the department to hire 25 officers. The news station reports that 184 agencies nationwide will receive funding, which will help keep or add more than 900 jobs in law enforcement.

A gunman ambushed Dallas officers in July and killed five of them before he was killed by a police robot bomb.

"It's been tremendously heartening that Dallas has stuck together through all of that," Lynch said, per NBC. "I thought frankly it was just a tragic irony that in a community where you had police officers who were making sure that the protest went forward as planned and as authorized, that's the city that someone chose to come to and try to sow dissension."

Another city pegged to receive federal money is Detroit, which will use $2.6 million from the Department of Justice to hire 21 police officers in and around the city.

Chicago, which has seen more than 500 homicides in 2016, will receive $3.1 million.
