Pittsburgh GOP Slams Outing Businesses Backing Trump

Pittsburgh Republicans are clapping back at a local social media effort to identify and boycott businesses that support President Donald Trump.

"They want to cost people their livelihoods just because you don't agree with them politically?" Allegheny County Councilman Sam DeMarco, who chairs the county's Republican Party, asked local TV station KDKA.

"It's not just absurd, but I believe it's dangerous."

According to KDKA, a recent Facebook post identified a page as "Ban Kenny Chesney from Pittsburgh" said the names of as many as 100 local businesses owned by Trump supporters would soon be disclosed on a new website.

However, the Facebook page had been removed by Tuesday night, KDKA reported.

The post promised that the new website would include "a database of Trump-supporter owned businesses in the Pittsburgh area, as well as tips for how to get those specific businesses closed down."

But DeMarco ripped the effort as "insane" and "fascist."

"Where does it stop?" he told KDKA. "This is insane."

The report noted that donors of at least $200 to political campaigns must be disclosed to the Federal Election Commission.

"Look at what they're trying to do," DeMarco said. "People who they just don't agree with, they want to take and punish.

"This is a fascist behavior — and I totally reject it," he said.

DeMarco likened the effort to Nazis drawing Stars of David on Jewish-owned businesses to urge Germans to boycott them during the Holocaust.

"I absolutely see a parallel," he said. "They're trying to place a mark on a business to boycott it, to not frequent it, not to utilize it and try to make it unacceptable."
