Pew Research: 86M Americans Don't Want to Work

By    |   Friday, 14 Nov 2014 03:14 PM

What’s the matter with kids today? They don’t want to work, even if they could find a job.

The Pew Research Center on Friday reported that an astounding 85.9 million of Americans in October simply weren’t interested in working. That figure represents 93.3 percent of the 92 million Americans who are neither employed nor looking for work. That figure is never included in the official monthly jobless rate, which counts only unemployed people looking for jobs.

"Teens and young adults aren’t as interested in entering the workforce as they used to be, a trend that predates the Great Recession," Pew analyst Drew DeSilver wrote.

"By far, the biggest chunk of people not in the labor force are people who simply don’t want to be … "

He noted that the October jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the share of 16- to 24-year-olds who don’t want to work rose from an average of 29.5 percent in 2000 to an average of 39.4 percent through October of this year.

Overall, DeSilver wrote, more women than men said they had no interest in working.

"Last month, 28.5 percent of men said they didn’t want a job, up from 23.9 percent in October 2000 and 25.2 percent in October 2008. For women, the share saying they didn’t want a job hovered around 38 percent throughout the 2000s but began creeping up in 2010, reaching 40.2 percent last month," he wrote.

At Breitbart, senior editor-at-large Ben Shapiro blamed President Barack Obama
and the healthcare reforms.

"The labor force participation rate in the United States is at a three-decade low thanks to President Obama’s job-killing economic measures," he wrote.

"Democrats could not be happier about this development. After all, one of the stated goals of Obamacare was to free Americans from so-called job lock, the heinous condition by which Americans are forced to work in order to earn money or be provided healthcare by employers."
