Most Americans say they have either achieved the American dream — or are well on their way, according to a new survey.

The Pew Research poll released Wednesday found 17 percent of respondents said the American dream is "out of reach for them" — but 36 percent said they had achieved it already, and 46 percent said they are on their way to achieving it.

In a racial and ethnic breakdown, Pew researchers also found 41 percent of whites, 17 percent of blacks, and 32 percent of Hispanics say they have already achieved the dream — while 62 percent of blacks, 51 percent of Hispanics, and 42 percent of whites say they are on their way.

The pollster found there is no significant racial or ethnic differences in the shares who say the American dream is out of reach for their families.

Here is how people described what is essential to the American dream:

  • 11 percent say "being wealthy" is essential.
  • 77 percent said it would be "freedom of choice in how to live."
  • 70 percent said it is having a good family life.
  • 60 percent said it is retiring comfortably.
  • 48 percent said it would be making valuable community contributions.
  • 43 percent said it was owning a home or having a successful career.

According to the poll, 40 percent say being rich is not important in their vision of the American dream.

It appears to be quite a turnaround from previous surveys, the Washington Examiner noted.

CNN's American Dream project in 2014 found 59 percent believed the American Dream was unattainable.

And in 2016, the Ripon Society found that 70 percent of middle class voters don’t believe the next generation will do as well as they have, the Examiner reported.
