Pelosi Schedules Hearing on 'Race and Justice'

By    |   Thursday, 25 July 2013 11:13 AM EDT

The national conversation on race and racial profiling, sparked in part by President Barack Obama’s comments July 19, will continue with a congressional hearing July 30.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi announced the hearing, which will include the controversy surrounding the acquittal in Florida of George Zimmerman on murder charges.

A Pelosi aide told The Washington Examiner that the hearing — called "A Conversation on Race and Justice" — would include the Zimmerman verdict, along with a "broader conversation."

The acquittal of Zimmerman — a neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old black teenager in Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26, 2012 — has sparked widespread demonstrations and a national debate about racial profiling.

Pelosi, a California Democrat, will preside over the hearing, which will include Democrats from the party's Steering and Policy Committee.

Scheduled panelists are Southern Poverty Law Center founder Morris Dees, Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson, and civil rights lawyer Maya Wiley, president of the Center for Social Inclusion.
