Pastor: Evangelicals' Prayer With Trump Bordered on 'Heresy'

A North Carolina pastor and member of the NAACP said evangelical leaders who prayed with President Donald Trump last week committed "theological malpractice that borders on heresy."

Dr. William Barber, pastor of Greenleaf Christian Church in Goldsboro, N.C., told MSNBC "AM Joy" host Joy Reid that those religious leaders were "acting like priests of the empire rather than prophets of God."

"It is a form of theological malpractice that borders on heresy when you can P-R-A-Y for a president and others while they are P-R-E-Y, preying on the most vulnerable; you're violating the most sacred principles of religion," Barber told Reid on Saturday.

Evangelical leaders met with Trump in the Oval Office last week and prayed with the president while laying hands on him, touching off a tidal wave of criticism on social media, including Barber who tweeted about it the next day.

Barber on Saturday quoted a text from the Bible, from the book of Amos.

"There's a text that says when you do not care for the sick, you are actually violating the principles of God," Barber said on MSNBC. "So we have this extremist Trump-Republican agenda that takes healthcare, transfers wealth to the greedy — that's hypocrisy and sin."
