Man Accused of Aiding Hezbollah Has Philly Hearing

Friday, 25 February 2011 06:06 PM EST

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A 38-year-old dual citizen of the United States and Lebanon who's accused of conspiring to provide material support to Hezbollah has made an initial appearance in federal court in Philadelphia.

Moussa Ali Hamdan, a former resident of New York City, appeared in court Friday after being extradited from Paraguay. He's being held pending a detention hearing.

He's among a group of defendants charged in a conspiracy to provide material support to Hezbollah, which the U.S. considers a terrorist organization.

Prosecutors allege Hamdan conspired to provide the support in the form of proceeds from the sale of counterfeit money, stolen money and fraudulent passports.

The indictment also says Hamdan and others are charged with several counts of transporting stolen goods, trafficking in counterfeit goods and making false statements to government officials.
