Carrie Bradburn, president of the Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce, has apologized to Mar-a-Lago executives for Executive Director Laurel Baker's remarks urging charities to "have a conscience" about scheduling events at the resort owned by President Donald Trump, the Palm Beach Post reported.

Baker had said: "If you have a conscience, you're really condoning bad behavior by continuing to be there. "Many say it's the dollars (raised at the events) that count. Yes. But the integrity of any or organization rests on their sound decisions and stewardship."

Since last week, 16 charities have canceled their events at the resort, the newspaper reported. Many of the groups had cited Trump's controversial comments about the violence at a white supremacists' rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, NPR reported.

But Baker's remarks reportedly angered at least one of the three board members of the chamber, the newspaper said.

"Please rest assured that the board of directors and members of the Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce did not endorse or approve Mrs. Baker's comments to the media," Bradburn wrote to Mar-a-Lago's managing director Bernd Lembcke. "We apologize for any perceived association between those comments and the Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce."
