Democrat-Linked PR Firms Cash In on Obamacare Rollout

By    |   Wednesday, 30 October 2013 03:30 PM EDT

Millions have been paid to public relations firms to promote Obamacare, but at least one company with strong ties to the Democratic Party landed a $1 million subcontract, The Washington Times reports.

Federal records show the Washington, D.C., -based Buying Time LLC got a $1.1 million deal through the Recovery Act to conduct a "paid online campaign designed to drive consumers who need help with insurance issues to the Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) Map page" on the Obamacare website, the paper reported Wednesday.

The company's founder, Cathie Herrick, is a media buyer who reportedly has worked with the Democratic National Committee and Democratic presidential campaigns.

"How ironic that while the Affordable Care Act is being blamed for slowing job creation outside the Beltway, the law is offering plenty of job opportunities to firms inside the Beltway willing to promote it," Pete Sepp of the National Taxpayers Union told the Times.

Meanwhile, Families USA, a nonprofit consumer healthcare lobbying group, has received a $1 million grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to push Pro-Obamacare stories to the media, reports Time magazine.

The group was co-founded by lawyer Ronald Pollack, who was appointed by President Bill Clinton as the sole consumer representative on the Presidential Advisory Commission on Consumer Protection and Quality in the Health Care Industry. Pollack worked on the Patients’ Bill of Rights.

"The purpose is to bridge the information gap for people who can significantly benefit from the Affordable Care Act," Pollack told Time, noting that the foundation grant will "significantly expand" the story bank and allow the organization and its partner GMMG, a communications firm, to hire six new positions in Washington, DC.
