President Barack Obama and his opponent Mitt Romney have taken up Univision's offer for them to discuss Hispanic issues on the air, but they will appear on separate nights.
The forums, called “Meet The Candidate” will be filmed in front of live audiences for the Spanish-language network. Facebook is a co-sponsor, and Univision anchors Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas will be hosts.
The conversations will focus on education and the future of the Hispanic community,
Univision said. The dates and locations of the forums haven’t been released yet. Broadcasts will be made in Spanish and English, and the candidates will answer questions both from the anchors and the audience.
“These events speak to President Obama and Gov. Romney recognizing the important role Hispanic America will play in the elections and in defining the future of our country,” Univision News President Isaac Lee said in a release. “These conversations are critically important to the community we serve.”
Univision’s decision to hold the forums came after the Commission on Presidential Debates rejected the network’s proposal to sponsor a Latino-themed debate.
Romney’s appearance gives him the chance to cut into Obama’s large lead among Hispanic voters, with an NBC News-Wall Street Journal-Telemundo poll released Wednesday showing Obama ahead 63 to 28 percent. The Romney campaign reportedly sees 38 percent as the magic number of Hispanic support he needs to win the election.
