Former President Barack Obama raised the bogeyman of Adolf Hitler as he urged Americans to "pay attention" to democracy and not take it for granted, during an address before the Economic Club of Chicago on Tuesday.

"The danger is [to] grow complacent. We have to tend to this garden of democracy or else things could fall apart quickly. That's what happened in Germany in the 1930s," Obama said before an audience of 2,800, Crain's Chicago Business reports.

"Which despite the democracy of the Weimar Republic and centuries of high-level cultural and scientific achievements, Adolph Hitler rose to dominate. Sixty million people died ... So, you've got to pay attention. And vote."

He added that it was dangerous to "grow complacent."

While some saw the remarks as a slap at President Donald Trump, who has been dismantling many of his predecessor's policies, Obama made no mention of the commander in chief's name.

Obama also suggested that the United States remains the world leader.

"Things don't happen internationally if we don't put our shoulder to the wheel. No other country has the experience and bandwith and ideals . . . If the U.S. doesn't do it, it's not going to happen."
