Dick Morris: Dems Will Force Obama to Withdraw Insurance Cancellations

By    |   Wednesday, 06 Nov 2013 01:05 PM

Political strategist Dick Morris says the problems that caused the recent cancellations of millions of health insurance plans will soon be over

"I predict Democrats in the House and Senate will force President Obama to stop cancelling insurance policies and restore those he has already caused insurance companies to cancel," Morris writes in The Hill.

"The party simply cannot go into the next election with tens of millions of voters angry with its members for costing them their health insurance."

The idea that the insurance policies available on the Obamacare exchanges will be superior to and cheaper than the policies Americans already have will prove to be a farce, Morris adds.

"Democrats will realize that they have no chance of taking the House or of keeping the Senate after they have cancelled the healthcare plans of millions of Americans over their objections," he writes.

"To roll back the cancellations and to prevent future terminations would require no statutory amendment of the healthcare reform legislation."

The Affordable Care Act actually allows policies in place before February 2010 to be maintained, Morris notes. "The cancellations stem not from anything in the law itself, but from regulations adopted by the Health Department after its passage — and never affirmed by Congress," he writes

"These administrative fiats preclude grandfathering in any policies that have been changed, in any way, since February 2010."

But Democrats will protest that "they never intended for the grandfathering clause to be waived so easily," Morris says. "They will argue that they inserted the provision precisely to permit the president to claim that 'if you like your healthcare plan, you can keep your healthcare plan.'"

Morris believes Obama will have to accept the changes. "The president, with his personal credibility at stake, will have to give in and void the HHS regulation," Morris says. "He cannot afford to have his legacy become one of a big lie that impacts tens of millions of Americans."

"Without the cascade of new Obamacare enrollments that would be generated by a stream of cancellations of current coverage, the enrollment statistics for Obamacare will be pathetic," Morris writes.

"They will be a national joke, much as the glitches in the enrollment process itself have turned out to be."
