Blogger Obama: Pass the Non-Discrimination Act

By    |   Monday, 04 Nov 2013 10:13 AM

President Barack Obama took to blogging over the weekend, making the case for a bill that would make it illegal for employers to discriminate against workers based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

"Right now, in 2013, in many states a person can be fired simply for being lesbian gay, bisexual, or transgender," Obama wrote Sunday
in a blog posting on The Huffington Post.

"As a result, millions of LGBT Americans go to work every day fearing that, without any warning, they could lose their jobs — not because of anything they've done, but simply because of who they are," he said.

The Employment Non-Discrimination Act is up for a vote in the Senate Monday, and the president claims that the measure "has strong bipartisan support and the support of a vast majority of Americans."

According to The Washington Post, he's is right. More than 70 percent of Americans support the bill.

The anti-discrimination bill passed a Senate committee in July by a vote of 15-7, when Republican Sens. Orrin Hatch of Utah, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Mark Kirk of Illinois joined 12 Democrats to support it.

Sponsors are Republican
Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and Kirk.

The bill failed in the Senate by one vote in 1996. Sixty votes are needed to avoid a Republican filibuster.

Twenty-two states plus the District of Columbia already have laws that prohibit workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation.

"Our nation's journey toward equality isn't complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law, for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well," the president wrote.

"So I urge the Senate to vote yes on the bill, and the House of Representatives to do the same."
