President Barack Obama’s campaign is hitting back at the birthers with button humor.
The president’s campaign tweeted a link to a page on his campaign website that offers up for sale a “Made in the USA” button. Supporters can buy a $5 button that features a grinning portrait of Obama above the words “Made in the USA” and a picture of his birth certificate.
“There's really no way to make the conspiracy about President Obama's birth certificate completely go away, so we might as well laugh at it — and make sure as many people as possible are in on the joke. Get your Obama birth certificate Made in the USA button today,” the text accompanying the button reads.
Last week, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney made a joking reference to Obama’s birth certificate controversy. The birthplace comment marked a departure for Romney, who previously kept his distance from questions raised by so-called birthers who question whether Obama was born an American citizen and thus may not be qualified to serve as president.
"No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate," Romney told a Michigan crowd. "They know that this is the place that we were born and raised.”
Romney’s campaign played down his comment, saying, “The governor has always said, and has repeatedly said, he believes the president was born here in the United States.”
