Axelrod to Shave His Mustache for Charity

For the first time in 40 years, Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod will take a razor to his upper lip.

Axelrod promised Joe Scarborough, co-host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” that he would shave the mustache he’s had for much of his life if the show would help him raise $1 million for epilepsy research.

The drive, which could be tracked on slashthestache.com, hit its goal Wednesday night at a fundraiser in Boston for Axelrod’s foundation, Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy. Scarborough started the campaign by pledging $10,000 during the on-air conversation.

Scarborough announced Thursday morning that Axelrod would appear on Dec. 7, “a day that will live in infamy, and cut his mustache” on camera, as promised, according to Politico.

The bet started before the presidential election, with Axelrod saying he’d shave if Obama lost Michigan, Minnesota, or Pennsylvania and Scarborough promising to grow a moustache if Romney lost Florida or North Carolina.

When Axelrod won the bet, because Obama won all three states, as well as Florida, Scarborough balked but the two arrived at a compromise to benefit people who actually need help.

Axelrod and his wife, Susan, started CURE at their kitchen table, they told the Boston Globe, after their daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with epilepsy at 7 months old when she had her first of what they said has been thousands of seizures.

She now functions like an early adolescent, Axelrod said, but has been seizure free since she was 18. He added that they are lucky compared to many parents they know who lost their children to the disease.

The foundation funds research into the disease in nine countries around the world.

“Part of the problem is that the epilepsy research kept plowing the same ground. It was hard to get cutting-edge ideas funded,” he said. “I’m absolutely convinced that what started at the kitchen table will lead to a profound new understanding of and approaches to epilepsy.”
