Obama on Eating 7 Almonds a Night: It's a Joke

President Barack Obama set the record straight about eating seven almonds every night as a late-night snack, The New York Times reports.

During an interview on NBC's "Today," Obama said that the seven almonds comment was a joke started by first lady Michelle Obama and White House chef Sam Kass and that the Times reporter misconstrued their comments.

"This is an example of the weird way that the press works," Obama said.

According to the president, Michelle Obama and Kass were teasing him about his dietary habits. "They were talking about me and teasing me about how disciplined I was, that I didn't have potato chips or that I didn't have a piece of cake. And this is when Michelle said, 'Yes, and he just has seven almonds. That's it. To really drive home the point that I needed to loosen up a little bit."

Obama said he began receiving phone calls from friends asking about his almond habit.

"I had to explain to them, no, this was a joke," Obama said.

Interviewer Savannah Guthrie teased, "After the White House, are you going to let yourself go and have like, 10 or 11 almonds?"

The president confirmed that he does like almonds. "Almonds are a good snack. I strongly recommend them.".

In a tweet, Washington Post writer Daniel Drezner compared Obama's almond joke with Donald Trump saying he was being sarcastic about calling on Russia to spy on Hillary Clinton.
