Mayor Bill de Blasio said New York City public schools are planning to reopen in September, The Hill reports.

During his daily briefing, de Blasio said the city is moving “full steam ahead for September,” with a goal of “the maximum number of kids in our schools as we begin.”

He said schools without enough room to practice social distancing or accommodate all students will have a staggered schedule that will be announced “well in advance.” Face masks will be required and buildings will undergo deep cleanings daily, the mayor said.

“We know the sheer logistical challenges with schools that were overcrowded before the coronavirus and now have to practice social distancing,” de Blasio said.

But not everyone is on board with returning to in-person learning.

President of the United Federation of Teachers Michael Mulgrew told Bloomberg that the union won’t go along with the mayor’s plan unless he can guarantee it won’t lead to more outbreaks of the virus.
