NC Gov. McCrory Mum on Controversial Abortion Bill

By    |   Friday, 05 July 2013 02:22 PM EDT

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory is remaining mum on whether he'll sign a controversial abortion bill if it reaches his desk, The Charlotte Observer reports.

Last Wednesday, the Tar Heel State's Senate approved new rules that would place tougher standards on abortion clinics and require doctors to be present when pregnant women take pills to induce abortions.

The bill is expected to go before the North Carolina House this month.

Foes of the law told the Observer the law will force the majority of the state's 16 abortion clinics to shut down. Supporters say it makes the procedures safer.

Asked by the newspaper on Thursday whether he would approve or veto the bill if it passes the House, McCrory, a Republican, wouldn't say.

"I've got people on the political left and on the political right and in the media more interested in making statements than finding solutions," he said.
