A field hospital set up in a New York City convention center to treat coronavirus patients is shutting down operations as the number of new cases slows and hospitals are able to handle the load.

The last patients left the Javits Center, situated along the Hudson River on the west side of Manhattan, on Friday after 1,095 were treated.

"We were able to offload some of the volume from the hospitals," the center's chief medical officer Dr. Chris Tanski said.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo held several press conferences at the Javits Center during the month of April. The Army Corps of Engineers constructed the hospital at the facility that contains 760,000 square feet of exhibition space.

Regarding the closure, a spokesperson from the Federal Emergency Management Agency told NBC News, "planning is ongoing for the drawdown of federal resources that are no longer needed due to the flattening of the curve."

New York has seen around 314,000 COVID-19 cases, more than any other country other than the U.S. More than 24,000 people in the state have died as a result of the illness.
