Newt Gingrich Calls Plan to Kill Va. State Income Tax 'Brilliant'

By    |   Tuesday, 12 May 2015 06:57 PM

Former U.S. House speaker and presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich says Virginia state Senate candidate Vince Haley's call to abolish Virginia's income tax is "brilliant."

Gingrich may be a bit biased, since Haley has worked for him since 2003. But Gingrich says Haley has "the work ethic, the courage and the intellect" to change the political landscape in Virginia.

"It's one thing to talk about lowering taxes. They can always be raised again. It's another to eliminate taxes. That's a huge difference, and it shows strategic thinking," Gingrich said.

He pointed to Texas, Florida, and New Hampshire as three states thriving without taxing personal incomes.

Interviewed by Watchdog.org, Gingrich says he has no political aspirations for himself. But the McLean, Virginia, resident says his protegé is ready for political battle to make Virginia the ninth state without an income tax.

Haley, a first-time candidate, is champing at the bit.

Whether pushing a middle-of-the-road state Senate to free-market positions, or pushing back against overreaching federal regulations, Haley said "political confrontation, not lawsuits," will win the day.

The attorney's first big test will be the June 9 Republican primary to succeed retiring Sen. Walter Stosch, R-Henrico, in the 12th Senate District.

The newcomer has set himself apart from the field by pledging to serve a maximum of three terms — a promise he says should be a prerequisite for politicians — and to abolish Virginia's income tax.

Haley's chief opponent, former Delegate Bill Janis, is vulnerable on both scores. Janis has refused to take the term-limit pledge, and he was MIA when the General Assembly passed a multibillion-dollar tax increase pitched by former Democratic Gov. Mark Warner.

Gingrich said Haley's tax-killing message plays well with a "universe of voters" fed up with squishy platitudes from a self-entitled political class. Instead of playing a shell game of offsetting taxes and creeping fees, Gingrich concluded, "The best way to control spending is to cut off the money."

Haley, a native Virginian, says he has heard the anger of voters during door-to-door campaigning. "I knew people didn't like politicians. I now appreciate the intensity of that distrust," he said.
