Boehner to Bloomberg on Drinks Ban: ‘Are You Kidding Me?’

Friday, 01 June 2012 10:39 AM EDT

House Speaker John Boehner is none too impressed with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s plan to forbid the sale of large, sweetened drinks in the Big Apple.

“I like Mayor Bloomberg, but are you kidding me?” Boehner said at a news conference Friday when queried asked about Bloomberg’s idea, The Hill reports. “C’mon, don’t we have bigger issues to deal with than the size of some soft drink that somebody buys?”

Bloomberg, an independent, offered the proposal this week as part of an effort to prevent obesity. His idea is to ban most restaurants, movie theaters, and other public vendors from selling containers of sugar-infused beverages larger than 16 ounces.

Many conservatives, including Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., already have blasted the plan as an example of government overreach.
